Dear Discharge And Burning Sensation - Could It Be An STD Or A Yeast Infection?,

During sex or when my boyfriend fingers me, I get a burning pain and i make him stop. I also had thought I had a yeast infection a few months ago but the discharge is back. I always use condoms during sex, but could this be an STD, or what could it be?

Dear Discharge And Burning Sensation - Could It Be An STD Or A Yeast Infection?,

A yeast infection is the name for a common infection caused by a type of yeast called candida albicans, which can overgrow due to things such as stress, pregnancy, taking certain medications and illnesses that affect the immune system. Discharge and a burning sensation (especially during sex or while urinating) are symptoms associated with yeast infections.

Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs) are caused by infections that are passed from one person to another during sexual contact. Sometimes these infections do not cause any symptoms. Some STDs, such as Chlamydia, due have signs and symptoms such as vaginal discharge and pain during sex.

TeenHealthFX cannot know whether you have a yeast infection or STD and accurately diagnose you over the web. We strongly recommend that you meet with your primary care physician, an adolescent medicine specialist or a gynecologist so that you can be properly diagnosed and treated. Yeast infections are treatable and there are many STDs (including Chlamydia) that are treatable as well. So please schedule and appointment as soon as possible with a medical health professional and refrain from any sexual activity until you have been properly diagnosed and treated.

If you don't have a doctor and live in northern New Jersey, you can call the Adolescent/Young Adult Center for Health at 973-971-5199 for an appointment with an adolescent medicine specialist or contact your local teen health center or Planned Parenthood. You can also contact your insurance company for a list of in-network providers.
