Feeling the Weight of Embarrassment

Dear TeenHealthFX,

 

I'm 17, I weigh 155 pounds and I'm only 5' 1". I'm a senior at a small high school where going to the gym and losing weight is seriously one of the only things people talk about. I've tried going to the gym, I have tried everything, even working out by myself but I can barely go a minute without feeling the weight of embarrassment and myself, and it doesn't take long after that until I start crying and have to stop. I've tried eating healthy; I just gained weight. I tried not eating at all; I gained weight. I've been battling depression for years, long before I started having weight problems, and they're just making it so much worse. I have absolutely no idea what to do anymore. I'm embarrassed to get my senior pictures and I'm dreading my own senior prom. People may think I'm lazy, but they have no idea how hard I've been trying. All I want to do is be happy with who I am, please help me.

Dear Feeling the Weight of Embarrassment,

 

Setting the goal of, “All I want to do is be happy with who I am,” is a good start. It must be very hard for you to be in that environment especially in a small high school. One thing you may want to look at is what are your goals, are they realistic and are they right for you. TeenHealthFX encourages young people to choose healthy eating and exercise to maintain optimal health. It sounds like you have tried a lot of different things but the best way to proceed is with a specific plan on how you can achieve those goals and to be consistent over time. Quick fixes rarely work and those that do almost always fade over time. Research has shown learning the basic of health eating and exercise and being consistent over time can lead to significant change that will endure over time.

 

It sounds like you could use help in making a plan and executing it. A good place to start would be with your doctor. This is where you can talk over what are the health goals for you and what is the best way to go about it. If your doctor can also refer you to a nutritionist who can teach you about the basics of health eating and along with you set up a nutrition plan that meets your specific needs. If you keep at this then over time you will achieve the results you want and develop healthy habits in the process.

 

When all is said and done it comes down to accepting ourselves for who we are. But there is nothing that says we can’t try to be healthy about it.
