Was Treated for a Yeast Infection, But Still Having Symptoms

Published: April 25, 2017
Dear TeenHealthFX,
I just recovered from a yeast infection a while ago. And after missing pills got my period. I forgot my pills for five days at the end. Not at the end of my cycle there is brown grey discharge that smells absolutely horrible. Please help me. I want to know why this happens to me.

Dear Was Treated for a Yeast Infection, But Still Having Symptoms,

TeenHealthFX is assuming that you when you said you forgot your pills for five days that you were referring to birth control pills. If this is the case, then the bleeding you experienced was most likely due to stopping the pills during the active part of the pack. TeenHealthFX recommends that you schedule an appointment with a doctor so that he/she can make sure the yeast infection is cleared up and help you to get back on track with your birth control pills again.

If you are sexually active, it is important for you to use a back-up method of birth control (such as condoms) until your doctor gives you the ok that you are back on track with the pills. Doctors generally recommend that teens and young adults who choose to be sexually active use condoms in addition to birth control methods such as the pill anyways in order to provide protection against the transmission of STDs (since the pill does not provide that protection).

Finally, FX wants to ensure that you know that you can continue with birth control pills during other medical treatments, such as treating a yeast infection. If you ever have any questions about being able to continue with the pill, pill effectiveness while taking other medications, or stopping the pill before finishing a full pack, please speak to your doctor.

If you don't have a doctor and live in northern New Jersey, you can call the Adolescent/Young Adult Center for Health at 973-971-5199 for an appointment with an adolescent medicine specialist or contact your local teen health center or Planned Parenthood. A Planned Parenthood health center is a good option if you have concerns about cost or confidentiality issues. You can also contact your insurance company for a list of in-network providers.
