Lump On Vaginal Entrance

Published: July 19, 2017
Dear TeenHealthFX,
So I have a lump on the outside of my vaginal entrance, it comes and goes, it doesn't hurt and if I push on it it can move. It's squishy not hard. I wanna know if this is something common or something more serious.

Dear Lump On Vaginal Entrance,

TeenHealthFX appreciates your concern for your health, as well as the time you have allotted to address this issue. FX cannot conduct a formal diagnosis since we are unable to examine the lump in person.

You did not indicate if you are sexually active. STDs are infections that are passed from one person to another during vaginal, anal, and oral sex. Although many STD’s can be detected immediately, some do not show symptoms. Thus, FX suggests that you get tested for STD’s if you are currently sexually active.

There is a small possibility that you are experiencing a Bartholin's cyst. This occurs as a result of a buildup of fluid or pus. It “typically occurs on only one side of the vaginal opening.” A Bartholin’s cyst can be either noninfected or infected. A noninfected cyst can go without being noticed, while an infected cyst will eventually cause symptoms including, yet not limited to:

  • A tender, painful lump near the vaginal opening
  • Discomfort while walking or sitting
  • Pain during intercourse
  • Fever

Overall, although the lump that you are describing comes and goes, and does not physically pain you, it is still essential that you schedule an appointment with your doctor as soon as possible. He/she can examine the lump in person, and provide any treatment necessary.

If you don't have a doctor and live in northern New Jersey, you can call the Adolescent/Young Adult Center for Health at 973-971-5199 for an appointment with an adolescent medicine specialist or contact your local teen health center or Planned Parenthood. You can also contact your insurance company for a list of in-network providers.
