Scared It Was The Alcohol

Published: December 19, 2013
Dear TeenHealthFX,

I have been feeling a bit off lately...I have a constant headache, I get adrenaline rushes sometimes, I feel woozy sometimes and also have a weird feeling like I am going to shiver, but I don't. I have not had a period for two months (and am not pregnant) but I have had cramps lately. I also drank alcohol about a week and a half ago and got sick from it, but was fine after. Are these things related? I do not know what is wrong and I am scared. If it is the alcohol I am scared that it could do permanent damage. Help!

Dear Scared It Was The Alcohol,

It is very unlikely that alcohol could be causing these types of problems 10 days after you consumed it. However if you are experiencing anxiety over having gotten drunk then this could have some physical affect on you. In this case it would be your thoughts about drinking that could be affecting how you are feeling physically or mentally, not the alcohol itself.

Something that you would also have to consider it whether someone put something in your drink that you were not aware of. That is why you have to be so careful, especially if you are a young woman in a social (it does happen to males too.)  It is always important for anyone to take precautions when they are at a social function where any types of beverages are served. What you are experiencing is most likely not permanent but you should see a doctor. This will put your mind at ease and if there is something going on medically, he/she will be able to diagnose the problem and let you know how it should be treated.

If you don't have a doctor and live in northern New Jersey, you can call the Adolescent/Young Adult Center for Health at 973-971-6475 for an appointment with an adolescent medicine specialist or contact your local teen health center. You can also contact your insurance company for a list of in-network providers.
