I Feel Like Giving Up. Please Advise.

Published: January 07, 2023
Dear TeenHealthFX,
Hi I am female I live with my mom. She raised me and younger sibling by herself, just retired from working. Her life has not been easy but she has done well for herself and I respect that. My sibling high achiever and also very successful. Then there is me...I used to think I was a nice person with a good heart. I try really hard but I'm not smart and basically my life is nothing. I used to pretend like it didn't bother me but after so many years of everyone saying "you are nothing" I believe it's true. And when finally faced with "what are you going to do?" All I could say was "I don't know anymore" it's like everything in me finally gave up. I don't know if I should even try ending it bc I prolly won't get it right either. Please advise

Dear I Feel Like Giving Up. Please Advise. ,

TeenHealthFX is sorry to hear about what you are going through. One thing we want to mention that comparing yourself to your mom, sibling, or anyone else for that matter can lead to feelings like you are having. Your life is worth living and you are something.

It is important to try to focus on things that make you happy and things you are good at. Just because you mom or sibling are good at something does not always mean you will, too. We would also like to mention that you do not need to decide right now what want to do with your life. College (if that is something you are considering) has undecided options, in addition, it may be a good idea to look into a variety of hobbies or things you enjoy doing.

Even though we cannot diagnose or treat over the internet, however, there are many resources and options available. Since you mention not being sure what to do, TeenHealthFX strongly encourages you to reach out to a parent, trusted adult, or school counselor and let them know what is going on. They will be able to assist you in getting the help you need and in contact with a mental health professional, if needed.

If you feel you need immediate assistance, call 911 or if you live in Northern New Jersey, you can call the Atlantic Behavioral Health ACCESS Center at 1-888-247-1400. Nationally, you can also call 9-8-8 or text the Crisis Text Line by texting HOME to 741741 to connect with a Crisis Counselor. We also have a Mental Health resource page with additional hotlines and websites that may be helpful.
