Coronavirus (COVID-19): My Dad Is An Essential Worker And I Am Worried

Published: March 30, 2020
Dear TeenHealthFX,
My Dad has to work everyday. He is considered an “essential worker”. He wears gloves normally, and keeps “social distance”. When he comes home he goes directly to the washing machine and disrobes, then showers. Right now, he shows no symptoms, but I am scared for him, and for me. What should I do?

Dear Coronavirus (COVID-19): My Dad Is An Essential Worker And I Am Worried,

TeenHealthFX understands your concerns and thank you for reaching out. We are living in very challenging times right now and it can be scary at times. We are glad to hear that your dad is using gloves when he is working. In addition, it is great that your dad goes directly to the shower and washes his clothes right away. All these actions are to help prevent him from possibly spreading the virus to you and your family if he was exposed.

Since your dad must go to work every day, it would be a good idea to talk to your parents about how you are feeling and your concerns. It’s also a great opportunity to talk as a family about how to keep each other healthy and safe.  The Centers for Disease Control has great tips on how to prepare and stay safe.
