Dear Can I Get My Cast Wet?,

I just got a cast this summer on my arm. It feels like the worst timing ever since it's the summer and all my friends go to the pool all the time. Can I get my cast wet? One of my friends says I can't.

Dear Can I Get My Cast Wet?,

Whether or not your cast can get wet depends on the type of case you have. According to the Mayo Clinic if you have a plaster cast over cloth wrapping, that kind of cast needs to stay dry. If you have a fiberglass cast lined with a water-repellent liner, it should be fine to get that type of cast wet. However, it is important to check with your doctor to make sure that you have a fiberglass cast and that your doctor is okay with your getting it wet. So speak to your doctor before diving into your local pool - don’t make the executive decision on your own about whether or not you can get your cast wet!

For more information on how to properly care for your cast, including more detailed information on whether or not you can get your cast wet, check out the Mayo Clinic webpage on Cast care: Do’s and don’ts. And any questions and concerns about your cast and appropriate care instructions, check in with your doctor.
