Something I Can keep to Myself

Dear TeenHealthFX,

So I know it's important to tell your gynecologist if you are sexually active with another person, which I'm not and never have been. What I'm wondering is do you have to also tell if you masturbate, or is that something you can keep to yourself?

Dear Something I Can keep to Myself,

Unless masturbating is causing you pain or discomfort, then it wouldn’t be critical that you disclosed this. However, TeenHealthFX encourages our readers to always be open and honest with your doctor. It is completely understandable if you are uncomfortable talking about this topic. However, eventually you will have to have these types of sensitive conversations with your doctor. It helps if you realize that your doctor is focused on your sexual health and not judging your sexual activity.

Medical professionals deal with these issues regularly and are professional and comfortable when talking about them. They recognize that some patients can feel awkward or anxious when talking about sexuality. Most of them do their best to put the patient at ease as well as educate her/him on the topic of sexual health. In most cases the more you learn about sexuality the easier it is to talk about.
