Dear TeenHealthFX,

hello, recently, i have been seeing two purplish halos around points of light in a dark room or area. it is very faint, and not very noticeable. however, i have been reading online that it could be a symptom of glaucoma, so naturally im starting to worry.  i will specify i am under 20 and that i am female, if its any concern.

Dear Is This A Symptom Of Glaucoma?,

While TeenHealthFX is unable to give any kind of accurate medical diagnosis over the web, we do think it is unlikely that you would be dealing with glaucoma given that it is an eye condition most commonly seen in older adults. Without knowing your medical history (Have you had eye exams yearly as part of your annual well-visit with the doctor? Have there been any problems with your eyes in the past? Have you had any recent injuries or traumas to your eyes or head?), it is very hard to speculate about what this could be.

That said, FX recommends that you schedule an appointment with your primary care physician or adolescent medicine specialist. If your doctor is not able to provide an accurate diagnosis, he/she may send you on to an ophthalmologist, a doctor who specializes in eye and vision care so you can be properly diagnosed and treated.

If you don't have a doctor and live in northern New Jersey, you can call the Adolescent/Young Adult Center for Health at 973-971-5199 for an appointment with an adolescent medicine specialist or contact your local teen health center. You can also contact your insurance company for a list of in-network providers.
