I heard computers can damage your eyesight

Dear I heard computers can damage your eyesight,

I am a 17 year old male. I heard computers can damage your eyesight. Is it really true? I play a lot of video games and use computers a lot at school. I have my own computer in my bed room. The monitor is about 20 inches away from my face. My mom wears contacts and both of my parents use reading glasses. Itâ??s hard for me to read something far distance. Example: from my bed to my TV. Is there a way to improve your eyesight? Thanks

Dear I heard computers can damage your eyesight,

TeenHealthFX just recently did a Hot Topic on this very issue titled “Computer Vision Syndrome.” The piece addresses the symptoms and causes of eye problems related to prolonged computer use. It also makes suggestion on how to relieve the strain on your eyes when using the computer.

Be careful of self-help programs of eye exercises that claim to reduce or eliminate your need for glasses and contacts have been around for a long time. But before you spend time and money on anything that promises you will be able to "throw away your glasses," you should be aware that these programs remain highly controversial and most vision experts contend there is little or no scientific evidence that shows they work. If you are having regular difficulty with your eye sight you should be seen by an Ophthalmologist (a medical doctor who is specialized in eye and vision care.)
