Dear Am I Old Enough For Contact Lenses?,

I'm tired of wearing glasses and want to try contact lenses. Are teens old enough or is it better to wait until you are an adult?

Dear Am I Old Enough For Contact Lenses?,

According to the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) it is ok for teens to wear contact lenses if they do/consider the following:

  • Check with your ophthalmologist or optometrist to make sure that contacts are appropriate for you.

  • Be aware that contacts are not completely risk-free. The use of contact lenses has been linked to various eye infections and other complications. So before making the decision to switch to contacts make sure that you are aware of the risks.

  • Learn how to use your contacts in a way that will help protect the health of your eyes. This includes things like washing your hands well before handling your contact lenses, not sleeping in your contacts (unless your doctor has given you the ok to do so), and not wearing your contacts in the shower, hot tub or while swimming.

For more information, check out the CDC Fast Facts on contact lenses, as well as the WebMD article Children and Contact Lenses, and speak to your ophthalmologist or optometrist.
