My Eye Has Been In Pain For 24 Hours

Dear My Eye Has Been In Pain For 24 Hours,

For the past 24 hours or so my eye has been really hurting me. It feels like something is stuck in it, but I don't see anything and I've flushed it out with water several times and it doesn't change anything. I'm tearing a lot more, too. And it especially hurts when I blink or have my eyes closed. What is it and what should I do?

Dear My Eye Has Been In Pain For 24 Hours,

The pain and tearing you are experiencing could be due to a corneal abrasion. It is also possible you have something in your eye, perhaps under you eyelid, which is why it hurts more to blink and have your eyes closed. It is important for you to seek out medical help for this as soon as possible so that a doctor can determine what is causing the pain and provide any necessary treatment.

You could contact your primary care physician and let them know what the problem is. They may be able to meet with you to address this problem, or they might refer you to an ophthalmologist. If your doctor is unavailable you can go to local emergency room. But whomever you meet with, it is recommended to so right away.

If you don't have a doctor and live in northern New Jersey, you can call the Adolescent/Young Adult Center for Health at 973-971-5199 for an appointment with an adolescent medicine specialist or contact your local teen health center. Again, if you are unable to find a doctor to meet with right away, you can go to your local emergency room.
