My Hands And Feet Sweat A Lot

Dear My Hands And Feet Sweat A Lot,

My hands (and sometimes feet) sweat a lot for no reason. I will be doing homework and then suddenly my hands start sweating like crazy and I have to wait an hour before I can continue on with homework. I'm nervous to hold my boyfriends hand because of this. Is this normal? What can I do to stop my hands from sweating?

Dear My Hands And Feet Sweat A Lot,

The palms of your hands and the soles of your feet have more sweat glands than any other part of your body. Some people have hands and feet that sweat more than others. It’s a problem that can be common, but it can also be embarrassing for the person dealing with it.

The issue of having very sweaty hands and feet is usually not caused by any kind of disease. It is something that often starts in childhood and usually becomes worse when the person is feeling emotional or stressed.

Depending on how much you sweat and how much it interferes with your day-to-day life there are some treatments available, including prescription-strength antiperspirants that can be applied to the hands. If you are concerned by how much this is a problem, TeenHealthFX recommends that you speak to your doctor about it so you can find out more about what is causing the problem and how to deal with it.

If you don't have a doctor and live in northern New Jersey, you can call the Adolescent/Young Adult Center for Health at 973-971-5199 for an appointment with an adolescent medicine specialist or contact your local teen health center. You can also contact your insurance company for a list of in-network providers.

TeenHealthFX also recommends that you speak to your boyfriend about this. If he really cares about you then he will be understanding of this situation you are dealing with. And once he knows and shows you he cares about what you are dealing with, it might help decrease the amount of worry and stress you feel about it, which might actually help decrease the amount of sweating you experience.
