My Girlfriend Complained About My Breath
My girlfriend told me last night that she has a hard time making out with me because my breath smells. She said she only noticed it after I got my braces. Do you think that could be it?
Braces do not cause bad breath but they can certainly contribute to it. The main culprit of bad breath is the accumulation of bacteria in the mouth. Bacteria thrive on food particles that remain in your mouth. When bacteria begin to colonize it attaches to the smooth surface of the tooth and leads to the buildup of plaque (sticky mix of bacteria and the substances they secrete.) Since plaque is constantly growing in your mouth, the best way to remove it is to brush and floss your teeth every day.
Braces, wires, bands and retainers can add to the problems because they can trap food particles and make it difficult to brush or floss away plaque. Good oral hygiene is especially important for people wearing braces. Cleaning braces by careful brushing, flossing and rinsing, preferably after every meal and snack, is the best way to prevent plaque buildup.
