What Is Consent?
Did you see Frozen? Do you remember when Kristoff asked if he could kiss Anna? Did you laugh and think it was pointless? Well, believe it or not he was right.
Affirmative Consent is when yes means yes and no always means no. According to TeenSource.org, “Consent is a voluntary agreement between two people. When it comes to sex, consent is when two SOBER people clearly communicate that they want to have sex with one another.”
How does it work? COMMUNICATE.
Ask questions like:
Is it ok if…
Are you ok?
Do you feel comfortable?
Do you want to stop?
If someone says no or stop, you stop right away.
Get consent every time.
Pay attention to nonverbal cues.
How It doesn’t work:
- Assuming someone is going to be ok with something.
- Putting pressure on or guilting someone into doing something they do not want to.
- Not taking no for an answer and doing what you want anyway.
- Threatening to break up with someone if they do not comply.
Respect is mutual and is necessary for every relationship. For more information check out : https://www.teensource.org/know-your-rights/consent
