Can Masks Cause Acne?
Acne from masks is very real. Many people call it “Maskne.” We understand how hard it is to continuously wear masks, however it is extremely important to keep wearing them for the safety of yourself and others.
Yale Medicine has some great tips on how to prevent and treat acne that occurs on your cheeks and chin from mask wearing. One thing to keep in mind is to allow your skin to breathe. Since it will be under your mask, avoid the use of makeup, heavy moisturizers, and fragrance products.
Another thing to consider is the type of mask you are wearing. Your skin may be sensitive to the material and it may be helpful to wear a cotton mask that is 3ply (3 layers) or 2 layers with a filter pocket. These are usually reusable and should be washed after every use with a mild soap and lay flat to dry.
Lastly, it is important to remember that stress, diet, and daily habits can also have an impact on your skin. Try to eat healthy, drink water, and exercise to heal from the inside out. In addition, check in on your stress levels. It may be helpful to try to include some stress reduction techniques such as walking, deep breathing, meditating, or journal to help get you in a better mindset.
If you find your acne is still not clearing up, it may be helpful to see a dermatologist. A dermatologist specializes in skin issues and can help!
