Dear Is It Possible to Grieve Even Though No One Died?,

Grief does not only have be related to death. Grief can occur due to death or loss. The feeling of loss could be related to almost anything, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. You definitely are not alone in the grief you are feeling right now. In fact, it is becoming a widely known effect of what is happening in the world around us.

As a teenager, you may have missed sports games, school dances, school in person, hanging out with friends, experiencing “rights of passage” like getting your drivers license, going on vacation, or anything else you can think of. Feeling this grief is normal, completely understandable and very common.

The most important thing to consider when dealing with grief is to learn to adapt and accept the changes around you. Kids Health explains that grief is the “coping with a loss” and it is important to take care of yourself by getting enough sleep, eating healthy, and exercising.

In addition, it is equally important to take care of your mental health. Write out your feelings in a journal or reach out to a parent or trusted adult to talk about how you feel. A teacher, school counselor, or school nurse can also help.

If you think you may need help from a therapist, this is completely ok too! Any of the trusted adults listed can help you find one or if you live in northern New Jersey, you can call the Access Center from Atlantic Behavioral Health at 888-247-1400.
