Dear How Can I Help My Teen Who Struggles With Self-Esteem and Identity?,

TeenHealth FX understands your concern. It is very common for teens to struggle with self-esteem and identity!

Some ways to encourage positive self – esteem and identity is:

  • Open Communication. Allowing teens to have a safe place in the home and / or school where they can ask questions, have honest conversations, gather opinions and information on topics that interest them. Validating emotions while having conversations can be highly effective as well.
  • Encourage explore interests and new hobbies. This is a great way for teens to learn more about themselves, as well as their likes and dislikes.
  • Encourage physical activity. Something as simple as taking a walk can help relax the mind, increase mood, and improve energy levels.
  • Encourage a growth mindset. Allowing room for mistakes is a way to learn about life and themselves.

If needed, seek help from a therapist or medical professional. Therapist can be a safe place for teens to discuss things going on in their life and be given proper coping skills.

Patience, positive affirmations, and avoiding judgement can be useful for teens from their family while trying to work on their self – esteem and identity.
