My Dad Wants Me To Take Over His Job. How Do I Tell Him I Don't Want To?
TeenHealthFX understands how difficult your situation is because it’s your dad’s hopes and dreams for you and not yours.
First, you need to have a good idea about what you want to do in the future. How are you going to accomplish your goals? Will you go to college or a trade school? Do a work study program? How will you set yourself up for success?
Then, make the time to talk to your dad without outside distractions. Make sure it is one on one and explain to him that you have different plans for your future. Tell your dad that you’d like him to be open minded and you do the same in return. It is important to avoid feeling defensive and let your dad explain his thoughts, too. It may also be a good idea to talk to another trusted adult and even practice the conversation before you talk to him! Remember even though you disagree on the future, he is still your dad and being honest and respectful goes a long way.
We hope this helps. Good luck!
