How Do I Stop Growing?

Published: June 26, 2024
Dear TeenHealth FX,
How do I stop growing too tall as a 14 year old. I'm 5'7, and I want to be 5'9 as an adult, due to my familys height.

Dear How Do I Stop Growing?,

TeenHealth FX knows that puberty is a hard time. The height you will reach at the end of puberty depends on your genes. Genes are how our body creates our physical appearance; it gets passed from one generation to the next (from parents to their children). For example, if mom and dad have curly hair and freckles, their children will have them too. Genes can also be the reason one child has blonde hair like mom and the other child has black hair like dad.

Our genes determine more than just hair color. It also determines our height, weight, athletic ability, eye color, skin color, certain illnesses that can run in the family and so much more!

So unfortunately, your height is something you cannot change or pick, but as you keep growing so does everyone around you! The kids are your school will also be growing, some will be taller or shorter than others but that is okay! That is what makes everyone unique!

Please speak to your doctor, parent, or a trusted adult if you need to talk out why you do not want to be too tall.
