Dear Brown, Itchy Vaginal Discharge,

TeenHealth would like to begin by stating that vaginal discharge is a normal occurrence. Discharge is often a result of the vagina cleaning itself, in order to keep the environment healthy. The color, texture and amount of vaginal discharge varies, depending on the stage of the cycle.

However, vaginal discharge can sometimes be an indication of a health concern. Complications that may accompany brown discharge include: itching, burning, and/or pain and swelling in the vagina.

Causes of vaginal discharge in teenagers may include:

Some recommended routine vaginal-care tips include:

  • Avoid douching
  • Change your tampon and/or sanitary pad often during your menstrual cycle
  • Wear loose, cotton underwear
  • Wear loose fitted pants/bottoms

If this discharge persists and continues to cause you pain, TeenHealthFX suggests scheduling an appointment with your physician and/or gynecologist.

You also stated that you are experiencing strep throat and two ear infections. Women may experience vaginal infections as a result of consuming certain antibiotics. This being so, TeenHealthFX suggests that you contact your doctor and describe the symptoms you have been experiencing, in order to ensure that this pain and irritation does not persist and/or worsen.

If you don't have a doctor and live in northern New Jersey, you can call the Adolescent/Young Adult Center for Health at 973-971-5199 for an appointment with an adolescent medicine specialist or contact your local teen health center or Planned Parenthood. A Planned Parenthood health center is a good option if you have concerns about cost or confidentiality issues. You can also contact your insurance company for a list of in-network providers.
