Just Abnormal Bleeding

Published: May 14, 2012
Dear TeenHealthFX,

I am on the pill but have been sexually active with my boyfriend. I've had my period this month but it was only two days long and then it stopped which is unusual, then about a week after that I started bleeding again but only for one day. Is it possible I'm pregnant or could it just be abnormal bleeding?

Dear Just Abnormal Bleeding,

Chances are that it is irregular menstrual cycle bleeding, but pregnancy could also be a possibility especially if you were not using the pill correctly. Hormonal birth control methods are 95-99% effective against pregnancy when taken properly.

You could use a home pregnancy test to find out if you are pregnant, but it won’t give you any information about an irregular period. While it is not uncommon for a female’s menstrual cycle to be irregular in the early years it should become more predictable as you get older. Since this concerned you enough to write into TeenHealthFX then it really would be good idea to make an appointment with the doctor who prescribed your birth control. She/he would be able to tell you why your cycle has been off and determine if anything needs to be done.

Something that you really need to consider is that while the pill can protect you against pregnancy it doesn’t do anything to protect you from Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STD.)
