Frosbite From Semen

Published: May 14, 2012
Dear TeenHealthFX,

Like most people my age, I masturbate. I have this problem where when I masturbate and the semen gets on my skin, after a short moment, it turns my skin red and starts to burn it. Also, my semen is usually very cold... I'm not sure if that is normal or not, but the kind of pain can be comparable to minor frostbite. I'm also certain that I am STD free. What could be the reason behind my rather comical problem of frostbite semen?

Dear Frosbite From Semen,

TeenHealthFX is not sure why your semen would seem really cold to you. The average temperature is about 98.6 F or 37 C. Since semen comes from inside your body it is only natural that it would be around that temperature range. It is possible for a male to develop an allergic reaction to their own semen. This typically occurs after their blood has come into contact with their own semen. This can happen during a vasectomy (surgical procedure used to make a man sterile), testicular torsion (when a testicle twists inside the scrotum), or after an infection or trauma. A burning sensation can often signal an allergic reaction.

In any case this is not a normal response and the only way for sure to understand what is going on is to be seen by a doctor. To be on the safe side you should refrain from any sexual activity until you have been seen by a physician.

If you don't have a doctor and live in northern New Jersey, you can call the Adolescent/Young Adult Center for Health in Morristown 973-971-6475 or the Adolescent/Young Adult Center for Health in Summit at 908-522-5757 for an appointment. Outside this area contact a local Adolescent Medicine Specialist, your local teen health center or Planned Parenthood.
