Could I Be Pregnant?

Published: November 09, 2017
Dear TeenHealthFX,
My boyfriend and I had sex exactly one week ago and when he came, some came out of the base of the condom. We were both unsure as to whether any got on me though. I am also on the pill, however don’t take it at the same time every day and sometimes miss days. I have been freaking out about being pregnant because I’ve been feeling bloated, gassy, and my stomach feels weird sometimes. However, this could possibly just be me over reacting and stressing out. My period is due this coming week (in 5 or so days). If I get my period, does that mean I’m not pregnant?

Dear Could I Be Pregnant?,

TeenHealth is glad to hear that you are using condoms in order to prevent transmission of sexually transmitted infections. Some tips for proper condom use include:

  •  Always check the expiration date on the condom before using
  • Store your condom in a cool, dry place away from sharp objects
  • Use a new condom every time you have sex, and/or every time your boyfriend has a new erection
  • Visit Planned Parenthood: How to Put On a Condom to further educate yourself

TeenHealthFX cannot accurately determine whether or not you are pregnant. You can do so by conducting a pregnancy test. You can purchase a pregnancy test from your local drug store, or visit your doctor in order to have a blood test done by a medical professional. If you choose a home drug test, keep in mind that the optimal time to conduct this test is the day after your period is due and during the first morning urine.

If you don't have a doctor and live in northern New Jersey, you can call the Adolescent/Young Adult Center for Health at 973-971-5199 for an appointment with an adolescent medicine specialist or contact your local teen health center or Planned Parenthood. A Planned Parenthood health center is a good option if you have concerns about cost or confidentiality issues. You can also contact your insurance company for a list of in-network providers.

You stated that you have been experiencing symptoms such as feeling bloated and gassy. These are typical PMS symptoms, and are likely occurring because your period is due in about five days. Some tips to reduce PMS symptoms include:

  • Breathing & aerobic exercises
  • Limit salt, sugar, caffeine & alcohol
  • Take over-the-counter pain medicine like ibuprofen (Advil), naproxen (Aleve), or acetaminophen (Tylenol). Always follow the instructions on the bottle.

You also mentioned that you do not take the pill at the same times every day. TeenHealthFX understands that life gets busy, and it can be hard to remember to take your pill every day. You may want to try setting a recurring alarm that reminds you to take your pill. It does not matter what time of day you take the pill, just as long as it is consistent. TeenHealthFX recommends choosing a time when you are normally alone and less distracted, such as the morning.
