Dear Bruised Reddish Lump on the Side of My Vagina,

Given what you described, it’s very possible that the area has become infected. When women have pimples in the vaginal area it is generally recommended not to pop them because bacteria can spread and lead to infection. Whether the pimple was intentionally popped or not, this is what you might be dealing with.

Keep in mind that if you are sexually active, it is also possible that what you described is not a pimple, but rather a symptoms related to an STI, such as genital herpes or genital warts caused by HPV.

FX cannot make any kind of definitive diagnosis over the web. If you are sexually active, we do recommend you reach out to your primary care physician, gynecologist or an adolescent medicine specialist so you can get an accurate diagnosis and any necessary treatment. If you are not sexually active we do recommend that you make an appointment with your doctor if the lump is staying the same or getting worse, is causing you any pain, is accompanied by any other symptoms, or if it would simply ease your mind to check in with a medical health professional.

If you don't have a doctor and live in northern New Jersey, you can call the Adolescent/Young Adult Center for Health at 973-971-5199 for an appointment with an adolescent medicine specialist or contact your local teen health center or Planned Parenthood. A Planned Parenthood health center is a good option if you have concerns about cost or confidentiality issues. You can also contact your insurance company for a list of in-network providers.
