Pain From Sexual Encounter

Published: April 01, 2014
Dear TeenHealthFX,

My boyfriend fingered me for the first time today. It felt good whilst he was doing it but afterwards I was in a lot of pain and still I am. I'm a virgin and it hurts like burns when I pee. My clitoris is also quite swollen, what should I do?

Dear Pain From Sexual Encounter,

Since this was your first time there is the possibility that your hymen separated as a result your boyfriend penetrating you with his fingers. When the hymen separates, it can result in some slight bleeding and pain. Both the bleeding and the pain are quite normal and should stop after a short time.

Another possibility is that when a female is penetrated with fingers then there is the possibility that her partner's fingernails may have scraped the vaginal wall. The vagina is composed of sensitive skin and can be damaged if your partner is too rough. Like any cut it is possible to develop an infection if the condition is not treated.

Since TeenHealthFX feels that diagnosing over the Internet leaves too much to chance, we recommend that you make an appointment with a doctor for a complete evaluation. Since you are starting to experiment sexually it would be a good time for you to discuss the issue of birth control as well as protecting yourself from sexually transmitted diseases (STD's) while you are there.

If you don't have a doctor and live in northern New Jersey, you can call the Adolescent/Young Adult Center for Health in Morristown 973-971-6475 or the Adolescent/Young Adult Center for Health in Summit at 908-522-5757 for an appointment. Outside of this area you can contact Planned Parenthood or a local teen health center.
