No Period For A Year

Published: April 30, 2014
Dear TeenHealthFX,

It's been at least a year since my last period and I have no idea what's wrong. I've told my doctor but he didn't really think much of it and didn't give an all too reassuring answer. At first my friends and I would joke around saying woah guess who's pregnant, but too much time has passed and my boyfriend and I aren't sexually involved. Well the farthest we've gone is oral but that's about it. Yeah I'm pretty confused and just wanna know what's wrong with me. I mean I get all the symptoms it just never happens please help me out.

Dear No Period For A Year,

Your doctor certainly could be right that it is nothing to worry about. The problem is that while he is not worried, you are. It doesn’t sound like he takes the time to educate you about what is going on with your body and why you should not be concerned. An active dialogue would give you more information and help you build trust and confidence in him.

Talk to your mom about your concerns and decide whether you should go back to see this doctor or find a new one. If you have been content being a patient of his for years, it probably would be a good idea to make an appointment and share your concerns. Make it clear that you are alarmed that something might be wrong with you and his responses have not lessened your worry. You will either leave the appointment feeling better about your situation or knowing you need to find a doctor who is more sensitive to your needs.
