Dear TeenHealthFX,

Im 17yrs old and i lost my virginity at the begining of the month. A few days later i got my period. My boyfriend and i had sex again after my period we always use a condom and he said it has never broken or slipped off, and about two weeks later i started bleeding, more like brown reddish blood. Is this normal?

Dear Reddish Blood; Is This Normal?,

Depending upon when you have this brownish discharge it may be completely normal. If you are experiencing this discharge right before or right after your period it may be the outer portions of the uterine lining that is shed during your period. It can appear brownish in color and may produce some clotting or chunks. From what you descried this would be outside your cycle. However, it is very common for a female’s period to be irregular during the early years.  Abnormalities in your cycle can be due to many factors, stress, changes in weight, activity level and certain underlying medical conditions. The menstrual cycle can sometimes be a good indicator that there are things in the body that need attention. I it is important for woman to always listen to what their body is telling them.

What you are experiencing may not be dangerous but it is not normal for you, so you should make an appointment with the doctor as soon as possible to be certain what is going on. Being examined by a health professional will give you the exact answers you are looking for.

If you don't have a doctor and live in northern New Jersey, you can call the Adolescent/Young Adult Center for Health in Morristown 973-971-6475 or the Adolescent/Young Adult Center for Health in Summit at 908-522-5757 for an appointment. Outside this area contact your local teen health center or Planned Parenthood.
