Dear Can You Get Acne/Pimples On Your Vagina?,

Hey. I was wondering if you could get acne/pimples on your vagina because I've noticed a bump there but I've never had sex so it can't be an std. Right? I'm really concerned about this and can't really go to my mom because we've never really had a close relationship. By the way the bump was small and on the outer part of the vagina and kinda hurt when I touched it. Please help and thanks!!!

Dear Can You Get Acne/Pimples On Your Vagina?,

There are several things that could cause small painful pimple-like bumps on the outside area of the vagina, which is called the vulva.

One of the more common things that can cause bumps that look like pimples on your vulva (for those who are not sexually active) is folliculitis.  Bacteria likes to grow in warm, moist areas, and sometimes can grow in the area where your pubic hair originates from.  This forms a pimple-looking, painful bump.  A way you can try to prevent this, is to keep the area clean, warm and dry.  Do not use harsh soaps or douching methods and wear clean, dry cotton underwear.

In a sexually active teenager, the types of things a painful bump on the outside of your vagina might include sexually transmitted diseases.  Sexually transmitted diseases can be transferred via unprotected vaginal sex, anal sex and also oral sex.  Some STI’s (sexually transmitted infections)  that would cause painful bumps on the vulva are herpes simplex virus, as well as a chancroid caused by H. ducryei.  If you are concerned that you may have an STI, you should go see your doctor immediately to talk about potential treatments and ways to protect yourself in the future.

If you don't have a doctor and live in northern New Jersey, you can call the Adolescent/Young Adult Center for Health at 973-971-5199 for an appointment with an adolescent medicine specialist or contact your local teen health center or Planned Parenthood. You can also contact your insurance company for a list of in-network providers.
