I am Sexually Active and Experiencing Penetration Pain. What Could This Be?

Published: April 30, 2021
Dear TeenHealthFX,
I have been sexually active for the last 8 and a half months with no issues of pain and have been using protection with the same partner . In the last two days however I have experienced pain at penetration and am very confused as to what it’s caused by because we have not done anything different. What could this pain be . It’s inside the vulva.

Dear I am Sexually Active and Experiencing Penetration Pain. What Could This Be?,

Unfortunately, TeenHealthFX cannot diagnose over the internet. However, based on the information you provided it is possible that the penetration pain you are experiencing is due to lack of vaginal lubrication. WebMD explains that when this occurs, the pain can be resolved if the female becomes more relaxed, if the amount of foreplay is increased, or if the couple uses a sexual lubricant.

If you find yourself with worsening pain, we strongly recommend getting checked out by a doctor. If you need help finding a doctor and live in northern New Jersey, you can call the  Adolescent/Young Adult Center for Health at 973-971-5199  for an appointment with an adolescent medicine specialist.

TeenHealthFX would also like to mention the importance of practicing safe sex. We encourage all teens to use condoms every time they engage in any type of sexual activity, including oral sex. Condoms are 98% in preventing the transmission of sexually transmitted infections when used correctly and on every sexual encounter.
