Dear Am I Suffering From PCOS?,

Unfortunately, TeenHealth FX cannot diagnose or treat over the internet.

PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome), is a hormonal disorder that affects 8-13% of women within reproductive age, with 70% of cases remaining undiagnosed worldwide. PCOS is when your ovaries (the organ that produces and releases eggs) creates excess hormones.

As a result of that, people with PCOS experience symptoms such as:

  • Irregular periods,
  • Acne,
  • Ovarian cysts,
  • Excessive body hair growth,
  • High Testosterone Levels,
  • Mood Changes and / or Thinning Hair,
  • Weight Changes or Trouble Losing Weight,
  • Fatigue,
  • Trouble Conceiving or Infertility

PCOS is diagnosed through ultrasound and blood tests, which are typically done by a doctor. A medical specialist, a doctor that focuses on a certain part of the body, is best for PCOS diagnosis because of the complexity of it.

A gynecologist, a doctor that specializes in the female productive system, can be the best option to help you understand your symptoms. PCOS is treated in different ways, going to a specialist, such as a gynecologist, can help determine the treatment plan that is best for you.

If you still have concerns and need help finding a doctor and live in northern New Jersey, you can call the Adolescent/Young Adult Center for Health at 973-971-5199 for an appointment with an adolescent medicine specialist.
