Should I Feel Embarrassed?

Published: December 26, 2025
Dear TeenHealth FX,
Is it normal to wear a jockstrap for P.E. class in high school, and is it true you aren't supposed to wear underwear with it? I'm in 9th-grade. My dad is making me wear a jockstrap for P.E. class at school, even though none of my friends or classmates are wearing one, and I feel awkward about it. My dad emailed my P.E. coach a few months ago and asked him to enforce that I'm actually wearing it and wearing it properly. My dad told me the jockstrap is supposed to be worn without underwear for support, to prevent it from shifting, and to avoid chafing or jock itch when underwear traps sweat. Before class, my coach gave me a heads up that my dad emailed him about it and that he is required to follow my dad's instructions because it is a safety issue. After we change for class, my coach has me lift the jockstrap waistband on my hip where the leg strap connects high up above my shorts so he can see the empty space to confirm I'm actually wearing the jockstrap properly and don?t have underwear on. Are my dad and coach right about the no underwear rule with a jockstrap? Why are they being so strict about this when other guys in my class just wear regular underwear? Is it weird that I find it kind of embarrassing?

Dear Should I Feel Embarrassed?,

Doing things that are different from your peers can be difficult, and feeling embarrassed about doing something new/ different is normal. Getting clarity on why certain things are required or expected can be a way to feel less embarrassed. It is common for people to wear athletic gear, including jockstraps, for protection. That is less common during PE classes, but it depends if a doctor or parent feels it is necessary.

Athletic gear, such as a jockstrap, is beneficial for protection during physical activity. It is designed to be worn without underwear but commonly worn with compression shorts or underwear for extra comfort.

Any questions or concerns about the reason behind the jockstrap can be brought up by your doctor with your parent present so an understanding or compromise can be made from both of you. You can also express why this is a concern for you and how it makes you feel having to do this. Being honest about how you feel can be empowering and help your parents see another side of the story. If you cannot speak to a doctor, reaching out to another trusted adult like your coach or school nurse can be helpful.

If you need help finding a doctor and live in northern New Jersey, you can call the Adolescent/Young Adult Center for Health at 973-971-5199 for an appointment with an adolescent medicine specialist.
