I Think My Boyfriend Is Too Big

Dear TeenHealthFX,
I think my boyfriend might be too big. I don’t know if that is a thing... but it hurts when we have sex, not the whole time but when he thrusts.

Dear I Think My Boyfriend Is Too Big,

The average length of an erect penis is 4 to 7 inches. Penises come in different sizes much like a vagina does. During sexual intercourse, the vagina expands in the same way it would during child birth. There may be a variety of reasons why sex with your boyfriend is uncomfortable for you.

The activity leading up to intercourse, foreplay, plays an important role in getting the body ready for intercourse. This period should be enjoyable and will give you the opportunity to become more at ease and allow the lubrication process to take place. Insufficient lubrication and dryness of the vagina can lead to painful intercourse. It is a common problem and you can try using a water-based lubricant, like KY Jelly during or before sex. Make sure you do not use any oil-based products as they can break down condoms. Also, remember to always practice safer sex and use a condom.

The pain you are feeling could be a result of the penis hitting the cervix which is located at the lowermost portion of the uterus. You should consider trying different positions. TeenHealth suggests that you have an open and honest communication with your partner about how you are feeling.

If you want a more specific answer that is relevant to you, then you probably want to check with your doctor. If you do not have a doctor and live in northern New Jersey, you can call the Adolescent/Young Adult Center for Health at 973-971-5199 for an appointment with an adolescent medicine specialist.
