Could I Be Pregnant?

Published: January 23, 2018
Dear TeenHealthFX,
Could i be pregnant from this?. i was wondering if u could help me i am feeling paranoid at the moment and worried. me and a boy took part in a sexual act to cut the long story short, i was giving him a hand job and i am assuming there was pre-cum as it felt quite wet around it. I was fully clothed and he didn't finger me or anything and there was no masturbation involved on my part; he was touching my thigh but i had my clothes on anyways, but 10 minutes later i washed my hands- cant remember if i washed them with hot water or anything. But what i'm worried about is that i touched my clothes and belongings before hand and worried if i got anything like precum on there when i went to the toilet or anything or under my nails. please can u help me? i am not sure if im overreacting. was this a risk of pregnancy?. i was on my period. i also had mood swings and sickness and bowel issues and tummy pains and just worried if it was from this

Dear Could I Be Pregnant?,

In order for pregnancy to occur, sperm contained in ejaculatory fluids needs to come in contact with a woman’s vagina. From the scenario you described above it sounds extremely unlikely that any sperm would have come into contact with your vagina that would have been able to cause a pregnancy to occur. In addition, you had your period when this happened, which would also significantly reduce the possibility of pregnancy occurring even if sperm did come into contact with your vagina. All that said, TeenHealthFX cannot imagine you could be pregnant from this interaction. The physical symptoms and mood swings you experienced could be related to symptoms connected to having your menstrual cycle or to the anxiety and stress you have been feeling about this situation.

TeenHealthFX would like to encourage you to speak to your doctor about safer sex precautions for the future. Doctors generally recommend that teens and young adults who choose to be sexually active use condoms each and every time they have sex to protect against unwanted pregnancies and the transmission of STDs, as well as a back-up method of birth control such as the pill or birth control shot. Your doctor can make the best recommendations for you and discuss with you how to use properly use birth control to maximize its effectiveness.

If you don't have a doctor and live in northern New Jersey, you can call the Adolescent/Young Adult Center for Health at 973-971-5199 for an appointment with an adolescent medicine specialist or contact your local teen health center or Planned Parenthood. A Planned Parenthood health center is a good option if you have concerns about cost or confidentiality issues. You can also contact your insurance company for a list of in-network providers.

FX also suggests that you check out the links in our Resource of the Month: Planned Parenthood Resources on Safer Sex so that you can learn about sexual readiness, how pregnancy happens, pregnancy tests, emergency contraception, birth control, STDs and more. The more educated you are about these topics, the more likely you will make healthy decisions for yourself when it comes to your sexual health.
