Is It Possible One of Us Is Infertile?

Published: December 23, 2021
Dear TeenHealthFX,
When my partner and I had sex, he finished inside me and I didn't get pregnant. Is it possible one of us is infertile or are there other reasons I wouldn't have gotten pregnant?

Dear Is It Possible One of Us Is Infertile?,

Even though pregnancy seems to occur all the time, it simply comes down to timing. A sperm cell must be meet an egg cell just before, during, or just after ovulation. If a sperm cell does not occur in this small window a pregnancy does not occur. Since you mention that it was one time, please do not get discouraged and think there is something wrong with you or your partner.

Since you do not mention your ages, and this is a teen site we want to mention some important factors:

Pregnancy in adolescence can be very challenging and it is important to make sure you and your partner are ready for all the responsibilities that come along with it.

Check with your doctor to make sure you are taking care of yourself and taking vitamins to ensure a safe and healthy pregnancy.

Make sure you and partner are in an honest, monogamous relationship as it is still possible to contract a sexually transmitted infection without using contraception.

If you need help finding a doctor and live in northern New Jersey, you can call the Adolescent/Young Adult Center for Health at 973-971-5199 for an appointment with an adolescent medicine specialist.
