Are Drugs Dangerous In Early Pregnancy?

Published: January 13, 2020
Dear TeenHealthFX,
I just found out I am 3 weeks pregnant. I have used a small amount of cocaine, drank alcohol and smoked marijuana. Will this affect my baby and/or pregnancy?

Dear Are Drugs Dangerous In Early Pregnancy?,

TeenHealthFX highly recommends seeing an OB/GYN, a doctor who specializes in pregnancy as soon as possible to confirm your pregnancy and to see how far long you really are.

It is difficult to say whether the use of drugs in very early pregnancy can harm the baby or cause you to lose the pregnancy since there is very little research on it. However, since you had a positive pregnancy test, it is necessary to stop all illegal drug use completely. In fact, even some over the counter and prescription drugs can be dangerous which is why it is important to see a medical professional.  If you are currently taking a prescribed medication, do not stop until a doctor tells you to do so.

If you don't have a doctor and live in northern New Jersey, you can call the Adolescent/Young Adult Center for Health at 973-971-5199 for an appointment with an adolescent medicine specialist.
