Do These Things Make Me LGBTQ+?

Published: January 12, 2021
Dear TeenHealthFX,
dear teenhealth FX my friends keep telling me im probably lgbtq+. fot example, i show my bestie that im listening to 'i kissed a girl' from katy perry. and then she goes: yeah you're not straight. and then once, 2 of my friends were talking about lqbtq+ and when i joined in, it was like, 'yeah you're wearing blue mascara, and that choker is not straight, and your hair is pink, so ur either lesbian, or u should be while ur not.' I've never had a crush on a girl, but im starting to doubt my sexuality. all those tests on internet are just stupid, and i dont know how else i can find out. sincerely, a 14 year old girl PS. all the friends that told me these things are lgbtq+ themselves.

Dear Do These Things Make Me LGBTQ+?,

TeenHealthFX understands how hard it is to identify your own sexuality especially when others are trying to tell you how you should feel. Wearing blue mascara, having pink hair, listening to a certain type of music or wearing a choker does NOT make you LGBTQ+. Nothing can “make” you feel that way and these are all common stereotypes that do not apply to everyone.

At 14 years old, it can be very difficult to understand your sexuality and emotions. Some people know their sexual orientation at a young age and some people never do. Every person is different and has different likes and dislikes. There is no right or wrong way to feel. KidsHealth has a great article that can better help you understand.

The most important thing is to be yourself. Enjoy your individuality.
