Want to Stay Satisfied With My Body

Dear TeenHealthFX,
I'm a healthy 17 year old female. But I've been struggling with my weight and body image issues ever since I could remember. When I was younger, other kids would pick on me because I was always physically bigger than them. I was never overweight, just a bit "thick." As I got older, I learned to appreciate my body; but then one summer, I'd decide to try and slim down. It worked. But when the holidays came, I went into a binge/excessive exercise cycle. I hated the way I looked since I'd gained back the weight and then some. But now, I'm making a conscious effort to stay at a healthy weight and maybe even lose a few pounds. What can I do to stay satisfied with my body?

Dear Want to Stay Satisfied With My Body,

The best way is to practice moderation and consistency. The holidays are tough because there always seems to be an abundance of foods that are hard to resist laden with calories. A good portion of the population tends to pack on a few extra pounds at the end of the year. It sounds like you were try to equalize the extra consumption of calories it by furiously exercising and got discouraged and started beating up on yourself.

What’s most important is that you learned to appreciate your body in the past and you can get back there again. A big part of getting to that point was learning to accept you for who you are which leads to you becoming comfortable with you. Staying at a healthy weight is the most important issue because it means you are taking care of you and not trying to live up to other’s expectations. A healthy diet and moderate exercise will get you to where you want to be.
