Hey! I'm 16 and I usually drink 1 or 2 cups of green tea a day. Is drinking green tea bad for health, considering I'm not an adult yet?

There are only two possible problems when it comes to a teen drinking green tea. The first has to do with caffeine intake and the second has to do with drinking green tea while taking certain medications that might negatively interact with it.

So let’s start with the caffeine piece. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends a limit of 100 mg of caffeine for adolescents. A typical 8oz cup of green tea contains somewhere between 24 and 45 mg of caffeine. So in that regard having two cups of green tea (provided they aren’t extra-large sizes) should be fine. If caffeine intake is any kind of concern for you, you can always choose a decaf green tea option for yourself.

As for the medication piece, if you are currently taking any medications (or are prescribed any medications by your doctor in the future) just ask your doctor or pharmacist if there is any reason that particular medication might not mix well with green tea. For example, green tea can be high in Vitamin K, which would interact with Coumadin (although this is generally not a medication a young person would be taking anyways).

Other than that, enjoy your green tea!
