How Can I Better Prioritize My Life?

Published: October 16, 2018
Dear TeenHealthFX,

Lately I have been feeling so drained, mentally, and I know it is more than likely because I have put so much on my shoulders. I took 15 credit hours my first semester of college (in hopes of being able to transfer to a certain college), these past 2 weeks I have worked over 60 hours (I am getting trained to be a manager at Taco Bell but I have just recently been given the title of crew trainer. My pay raise isn't too good really, so now I'm questioning if me being there is even worth it), and I barely see my family even though I am still living at home. I go to school, work, and now I'm trying to rejoin this local theatre group since my dream is to act. I just do not know how to balance my priorities correctly. I'm also a Christian and I have barely been in church. I feel like I never have the time for everything I need/want to do. However, I feel like I'm ALWAYS on the go, which I do not hate it is just hard at times. So what I'm asking is do you have any advice on how I can better prioritize my life?

Dear How Can I Better Prioritize My Life?,

TeenHealthFX understands the stress that you are feeling because of your busy schedule. As recommended by TeensHealth, 5 ways to prevent stress buildup include:

  • Balance responsibilities (like schoolwork) with activities you enjoy (like relaxing or spending time with friends).
  • Manage responsibilities.
  • Eat healthy foods.
  • Get proper sleep.
  • Make time to exercise every day.

TeenHealthFX suggests reducing your responsibilities to ensure proper health. You may want to consider working less hours, waiting until your schedule lightens to rejoin your local theatre group, and/or enrolling in fewer classes/credits next semester.

If after re-adjusting your responsibilities and time commitments you still feel overwhelmed, TeenHealthFX suggests reaching out to a trusted adult. You can speak with your parents, school guidance counselor or teacher. Your trusted adult of choice can help refer you to a mental health professional, such as a therapist.

If you live in northern New Jersey and need help finding a therapist you can call the Access Center from Atlantic Behavioral Health at 888-247-1400. Outside of this area you can log onto the US Department of Health and Human Services Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration website for referrals in your area. You can also contact your insurance company to get a list of in-network mental health providers or check with your school social worker or psychologist to get a list of referrals in your area.
