Pregnant and Smoking Pot. How Do I Get This Person to Stop?

Published: July 12, 2021
Dear TeenHealthFX,
I know someone who is pregnant. Smoking pot daily. Has been a daily smoker for years with a medicinal prescription. This person is convinced it will be fine and just smoke a little less than normal every day. How can I convince her otherwise? She has had multiple miscarriages already.

Dear Pregnant and Smoking Pot. How Do I Get This Person to Stop?,

TeenHealthFX appreciates your concern for this person. Since you mention that this person has a medical prescription for Marijuana, we strongly recommend you encourage your friend to see the doctor who prescribed it as well as a OBGYN ( a doctor who specializes in pregnancy) to ensure that this is safe and what she should do. It may be difficult to “convince” her however, seeing a doctor will help her get the proper care and support she needs.

The CDC explains that marijuana in any form should not be used in pregnancy as it can be harmful to the baby’s development. This includes smoking, eating, vaping, or dapping. The CDC also explains that more research needs to be done to fully understand the harmful effects and should be avoided to try to prevent any potential damage.

If this person needs help finding a doctor and lives in northern New Jersey, she can call the  Adolescent/Young Adult Center for Health at 973-971-5199  for an appointment with an adolescent medicine specialist.
